From Coal to Living Carbon: How Coal and VITALIFE® Create True Humates
New Zealand farmers are looking for answers. They want better soil structure, stronger pastures, higher nutrient efficiency and long-term resilience. The solution many overlook is the power of living carbon - carbon that isn’t just sitting in the soil but working. This carbon is a large part of the organic matter in living soil. The combination of lignite coal and VITALIFE® is proving to be one of the most effective ways to create that living carbon through natural humification.
Fertilizer NZ use a young, sub-bituminous coal that sits in a unique “sweet spot” of carbon development. It is not yet hard, dead lignite, but still rich in long-chain organic molecules that resemble the early precursors of humic and fulvic acids. In other words, it contains the raw materials of humates. What it lacks is biological activation.
That activation comes from VITALIFE®.
Recent testing of VITALIFE® showed powerful biological activity:
- Bacterial biomass: 2,273.5 µg/g
- Fungal biomass: 274.43 µg/g
- Total beneficial protozoa: 97,784/g
- Flagellates: 36,442/g
- Amoebae: 81,487/g
This is a fully functioning soil-food-web community capable of digesting carbon, cycling nutrients, and building soil structure at speed. When this biology is blended with the carbon-rich particles of sub-bituminous coal, the coal is transformed from an inert material into a biologically active humate source.
The first stage begins with bacteria. These microbes colonise the coal surface and begin oxidising and breaking down the long carbon chains. Coal contains complex organic structures, and it is the enzymes from these bacteria that start converting them into the shorter, more functional humic fractions. This is nature’s humification process in action.
The second stage is fungal. The fungal biomass within VITALIFE® penetrates the coal particles and releases organic acids that further break down the coal. Fungi stabilise carbon, bind it into aggregates, and create the crumb structure farmers want to see. Their work turns the once-inert coal into soil-stable humus.
The third stage involves protozoa—one of the most under-appreciated drivers of soil fertility. With nearly 100,000 per gram in VITALIFE®, the protozoan community is exceptional. These organisms consume bacteria and release nutrients in the form of ammonium and organic acids, accelerating the breakdown of carbon and driving nutrient availability. Their grazing cycle builds microbial biomass rapidly, creating a self-feeding soil system.
The result of these three stages is a biologically activated carbon product that performs like a high-grade humate. It improves water retention, boosts nutrient holding capacity, buffers pH, increases root depth, and supports long-term soil structure. More importantly, it restores the soil’s natural biological engine—something conventional fertilisers alone cannot do.
Lignite coal provides the carbon framework.
VITALIFE® provides the microbial workforce.
Together they create living humates that regenerate soil, enhance fertiliser performance, and put biology back at the centre of New Zealand farming.
If farmers want lasting soil health, this blend is the future.
